The night
A night behind the decks in DTLA with Joey Cash. SCOUT logged him at 30,800 monthly listeners; he is north of 350,000 now. This is a live report shot on the night rather than a sit-down interview.
Leave-ur-bf-@-home-productions put together a venue that felt like it had been assembled by your friends, in the best way possible. A small roller table, a simple DMX setup, and an atmosphere much closer to a house party than a club. The crowd kept migrating out to the outdoor section, which made for a good cooldown when things got hot inside.
No shortage of vibes across the night. I got there during DJ Pvrker’s set and wish I had caught the whole thing. MP3girl played arguably my favorite set of the night, a wide range of genres and original mixes. Sami Monzer had the crowd engaged before the headline, and the special guest who came on right before Joey was exuding confidence and turned in a standout performance.
I have been a fan of Joey’s for over a year and was stoked to finally see him live. He was whipping his head around enough that I would not be surprised if he left with CTE. The songs carried live, and there was new material in there that is hopefully going on the upcoming album. The crowd brought energy, give or take the guy who kept putting his Snapchat light in Joey’s face. After the set I tracked down his manager and had a good conversation about what the job actually entails.
